Top Time Travel Korean & Asian Dramas

9 time travel korean drama

Time Traveling, Mystery and Romance!!!

Time Traveling usually falls in Science Fiction category such as Quantum Leap American TV Series, Doctor Who British Series, Time Machine by Jules Verne and so on. But in Korean Dramas and other Asian dramas they are not only staples for Science fiction fans, it can be also love story, mystery plot line between Josean Era to Modern era. Here are some of my top favorite Time Travel dramas, some you may have heard of and other you may not have. I have seen majority of these dramas but not all as some are hard to find with English subtitle, necessary for non-native Korean speaker like me.

Top Time Traveling Asian Dramas:

Time Travel can be scary, fun as person from past trying to learn new and modern ways of people living, it can be fun to watch like in Rooftop Prince where they get stuck trying to change clothes in Elevator, or it can be frustrating to others where Time traveling princess from “Thousand Years of Love” does not know modern things. Time travel can be done from Modern time to past like in “Nine: Nine Time Travel” where time traveler would know things of past, making it somewhat easier for to handle life but not always.

1. Nine: Nine Time Travels (Korean Drama)

Nine Time Travels-poster.jpg

Nine: Nine Time Travels

is a 2013 South Korean television series starring Lee Jin-wook and Jo Yoon-hee. It aired on tvN from March 11 to May 14, 2013 on Mondays and Tuesdays for 20 episodes. I somehow did not bother to watch it during 2013 when it was released as I did not know the actors much. However after reading about it in other Korean drama blogs, I decided to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised.

The Time Travel drama has adventure, romance, best kisses in it. Thi series is about a man who finds nine magical incense sticks that allow him to travel 20 years back in time. He attempts to keep his family safe in order to change the world he lives in today. However, this is not without consequences as his actions in the past affects the lives of many in the present, including his. As the show has a unique way of dealing with the concept of time travel, its ending is open to interpretation leading many to conclude it in their own ways.

Korean Drama: Full House Review

fullhouse

As far as I’m concern, this is the one of the best Korean drama ever produced next to the all time favorite, Jewel in the Palace. And no, I was not a big fan of Rain. What captured my attention was the chemistry between the two main characters, Han Ji-eun and Lee Young-jea. It was fantastic. Although the series was adapted from a 1993 comic, the story was ‘cooked’ to perfection with all the necessary ingredients of human emotions that made it an all time favorite.

Han Ji-eun and Young jea are two very different people from very different background. Han Ji-eun was an aspiring script writer who lived alone in a beautiful seaside bungalow her father built. Her loving parents passed away when she was about 17 years old. With no relatives to take care of her, Han Ji-eun lived alone and became attached to her friends from school. One day, out of desperation, her friends tricked her to leave for China for a week and then sold her beautiful property to a superstar actor, Young Jea while she was away. These two clowns needed money to prepare for the birth of their unborn child.

Full House OST

On the flight to China, Han Ji-eun sat next to Young Jea, who was filming a movie there. Han Ji-eun tried to make small talk but Young Jea was very aloof and a bit rude. As it was her first flight, Han Ji-eun became sick and accidently threw-up on Young jea’s shirt. He was very angry with her but when he returned to the seat after cleaning himself in the washroom, Han Ji-eun was asleep with her mouth open. He left his shirt in the seat pocket and alighted from the plane with his bodyguards while Han Ji-eun was still asleep.

Later it turned out, they stayed at the same hotel. It was at the hotel that Han Ji-eun met Min Heok, the handsome rich businessman who is also Young jea’s senior and best friend in school. Min Heok was at the hotel to meet Young Jea. When Han Ji-eun realised she had no money left for her filght home and that she was conned by her own friends, she decided to take a bold step by borrowing money from Young Jea.

She convinced him that she was Min Heok’s ex-girl friend who was unfairly dumped and needed help. He loaned her some money and she vowed to pay him back when she return to Korea. Young Jea had other plans in his mind. He was in love with Hye-won but she was in love with Min Heok. Hye-won treated Young Jea like a friend.

Onced back in Korea, Han Ji-eun got the shock of her life when she found her home was totally bare, her savings gone and her credit card spent to the max by her friends. She was furious and tried to find her friends and get her money back. Young Jea returned and was jealous to find Min Heok sharing a light moment with Hye-won at her boutique. He called Han Ji-eun and set-up dinner plans with Min Heok and Hye-won. He wanted to reveal Han Ji-eun to Min Heok, thinking that it would reveal Min Heok’s true colours to Hye-won. But, the plan failed and he found out that Han Ji-eun tricked him. They parted ways that night.

When Young Jea arrived at his new house, he was surprised to find Han Ji-eun at the front door with her lugage. She told him her story and he confronted his agent. The agent cannot explain the fraud but he had no choice but to throw her out. One thing led to the other, and he eventually agreed to let her stay but only as a housekeeper. Later, he forced her into a 3-year marriage contract where in the end, she gets to keep the house.

Han ji-eun eventually falls in love with Young Jea but tries to deny it. Meanwhile he continues to long for Hye-Won. Things became complicated when Min Heok falls for Han Ji-eun, Young jea’s parents involvement in their marriage and the return of her friends.

I cried and laughed while watching this movie, and I saw it three times. I’m not the kind of person to do this but this just shows how good the drama is. I must add that the music had played a large part in the success of this drama series.

Overall, this is definitely a box office drama series that shouldn’t be missed. I’d gladly give it a perfect 10/10.

Master’s Sun Korean Drama

masterssun

Master’s sun is is a 2013 South Korean television series starring Gong Hyo-jin and So Ji-sub The horror-romantic comedy is written by the Hong Sisters, and aired on SBS from August 7 to October 3, 2013 for 17 episodes. I generally like Hong sister’s stories, so I thought of watching the series, although I am a chicken and not fond of ghost stories or scary stories. I had not seen So Ji Hub drama before as he mostly does melodrama, but I had watched Gong Hyo Jin in Pasta and Greatest Love Korean Drama and liked her in it.

First episode beginning I got scared by scary looking grandma ghost, who becomes bit better after a few minutes, and watching drama at night time in dark did not help much. However, the drama is not scary and got better as time went along. Joo Joong Won (So Ji-sub) is a rapacious CEO who is only concerned about money. His secretary, Tae Gong Sil (Kong Hyo-jin) is a dark and reticent insomniac who is burdened with the ability to see ghosts. Joong Won and Gong Sil are an unlikely duo in every regard, but they share one thing in common: they are both intensely crippled personalities that need a lot of help. Can the money hungry Joong Won recognize priorities beyond the dollar sign, and can the lonely Gong Sil ever live a life without fear? Together, strange as it may be, it’s possible in this unique dance between yin and yang.

I like the second male lead and female lead both in here and did not hate. I also somehow did not have much opinion about evil girl Hee Joo/Hanna so much as she did not come across as powerful evil like some female characters from other Korean drama, or maybe I am getting used to all evil characters in Kdrama.

Would I watch it again? Probably not. It is a great for one time watch for sure and story did not get dull for me like it did with Cheong Dam Dong Alice. Seo In Gook, whom I had seen as supporting Character in Love rain, became much cooler and handsome guy in this series and I am happy to see him doing more roles.

While series is popular and hong sisters always adds cute trinkets in drama that I always feel like buying for myself or a friend. Here are cool Master’s sun product trinkets at affordable prices.

Understanding Korean Cuisine

As I watch more Korean Dramas, I become more interested in Korean Food as almost every Korean Drama as plenty of scenes where people are eating, cooking. Some looks awful, for example, when they talk and chew at the same time, and some looks interesting enough for me to try that food for my self.

Korean Cuisine with Side Dishes

I ate out a lot at Korean BBQ type restaurants but watching Korean Dramas have made me appreciate Korean Cuisine much more and want to learn more about it. Korean cuisine is largely based upon rice, vegetables, and meats. Traditional Korean meals are noted for the number of side dishes  that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. Kimchi is served often, sometimes at every meal. Commonly used ingredients include sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). Ingredients and dishes vary by province. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country.

What Kind of Staple Korean Cuisine Use:

Grains:

During the pre-modern era, grains such as barley and millet were the main staples and were supplemented by wheat, sorghum, and buckwheat. Rice is not an indigenous crop to Korea, and millet was likely the preferred grain before rice was cultivated. Rice became the grain of choice during the later period. Rice is used to make a number of items, outside of the traditional bowl of plain white rice. It is commonly ground into a flour and used to make rice cakes called tteok in over two hundred varieties. It is also cooked down into a congee (juk), or gruel (mieum) and mixed with other grains, meat, or seafood. Koreans also produce a number of rice wines (soju), both in filtered and unfiltered versions.

Vegetables:

Soybeans are most used and are made into tofu, while soybean sprouts are sauteed as a vegetable  and whole soybeans are seasoned and served as a side dish. They are also made into soy milk, which is used as the base for the noodle dish called kongguksu. A byproduct of soy milk production is okara (kongbiji), which is used to thicken stews and porridges. Soybeans may also be one of the beans in kongbap, which boil together with several types of beans and other grains, and they are also the primary ingredient in the production of fermented condiments.

Mung bean sprouts, are often served as a side dish, blanched and sautéed with sesame oil, garlic, and salt. Ground mung beans are used to make a porridge called nokdujuk, which is eaten as a nutritional supplement and digestive aid, especially for ill patients. A popular snack, mung bean pancake is made with ground mung beans and fresh mung bean sprouts. Starch extracted from ground mung beans is used to make transparent cellophane noodles (dangmyeon). The noodles are the main ingredients for japchae (a salad-like dish),  a subsidiary ingredient for soups and stews. Azuki beans are used a lot in various ways in Korean Cuisine.

Meat:

Korean people love their meat and has lot of beef, pork, chicken, fish, seafood are used local cuisine. Being mostly vegetarian, I know little about it meat dishes. One interesting thing my Korean friend said that, they also eat “dog meat”, which seems very strange liking dogs as a pet in American culture, to say the least.

Korean Cuisine Types:

Korean Cuisine is mainly soup and stews which they use not only as a starter but as part of main course meal.  Kimchi is eaten with almost all meals, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. Noodle, variety of side dishes and alcoholic drinks generally make up a typical Korean meal.

Soup/Stews:

Soups are a common part of any Korean meal. Unlike other cultures, in Korean culture, soup is served as part of the main course rather than at the beginning or the end of the meal, as an accompaniment to rice along with other banchan (side dishes). Soups known as guk are often made with meats, shellfish and vegetables. Soups can be made into more formal soups known as tang, often served as the main dish of the meal. Jjigae are a thicker, heavier seasoned soups or stews.

Stews are referred to as jjigae, and are often a shared side dish. Jjigae is often both cooked and served in the glazed earthenware pot in which it is cooked. The most common version of this stew is doenjang jjigae, which is a stew of soybean paste, with many variations; common ingredients include vegetables, saltwater or freshwater fish, and tofu.

Korean Noodles:

Ramyoen is common noodle eaten by everyone. They even have a special cookware used to make Ramen noodle and eaten from the pot itself.  Noodle with clear broth or liquid, buckwheat noodles, cold noodle soup, cellophane (clear) noodles salad and soup are popular and can be made with meat, tofu and vegetables.

Side dish/Banchan:

Korean cuisine is known for its vast variety of side dishes that one can see from table set (as shown in image above). At traditional restaurants, meats are cooked at the center of the table over a charcoal grill, surrounded by various banchan and individual rice bowls. The cooked meat is then cut into small pieces and wrapped with fresh lettuce leaves, with rice, thinly sliced garlic, ssamjang (a mixture of gochujang and dwenjang), and other seasonings.

Banchan can be steamed, grilled, raw or marinated (with vinegar, salt and seasoning) dishes. Anju are side dishes that can be eaten during drinking soju or rice wine.

Kimchi:

Kimchi refers to often fermented vegetable dishes usually made with napa cabbage, Korean radish, or sometimes cucumber, commonly fermented in a brine of ginger, garlic, scallions, and chili pepper. There are endless varieties with regional variations, and it is served as a side dish or cooked into soups and rice dishes.

Koreans traditionally make enough kimchi to last for the entire winter season, as fermented foods can keep for several years.  Kimchi is packed with vitamin A, thiamine B1, riboflavin B2, calcium, and iron. Its main benefit though is found in the bacteria lactobacilli; this is found in yogurt and fermented foods. This bacteria helps with digestion. South Koreans eat an average of 40 pounds of Kimchi each year.

Drinks:

Korean cuisine will not be complete without drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) both. Non alcoholic drinks has following categories: tea, hwachae (fruit punch), sikhye (sweet rice drink), sujeonggwa (persimmon punch), tang (boiled water), jang ,(fermented grain juice with a sour taste), suksu ( beverage made of herbs), galsu ( drink made of fruit extract, and Oriental medicine), honeyed water, juice and milk by their ingredient materials and preparation methods. Among the varieties, tea, hwachae, sikhye, and sujeonggwa are still widely favored and consumed.
