Bollywood Movies For Beginners

There are lot of people who watch Bollywood movies and dramas. I was surprised to find a few non-indian people can even sing a song of Bollywood movies. Bollywood gets his name from Hollywood and movies are made in Bombay (now called Mumbai).  So Bombay + Hollywood makes kind of bollywood, at least that is what I think how name came about. If anyone knows, do let me know. Indian bollywood movies are fun, the outfits are colorful and bright. Girls look pretty and guys are rugged and handsome. There is a song and dance every 15 minutes or so in a movie and it feels like it is part of movie like old hollywood musicals. If you ever want to see the craze for bollywood movies and check out movies, here are some movies that I think are perfect for new beginners to bollywood scenes.

Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai

I simply love this movie and Hritik Roshan who debuted with this movie and plays a double role of one rich and one poor guy who are not related by blood, but just happened to look alike. Rohit is an aspiring singer who meets Sonia. Their attraction turns to love when their cruise ship abandons them on a deserted island. Upon return to civilization, Rohit meets with an accident and is killed. A grief-stricken Sonia is sent to New Zealand to her cousin to recover. When she reached there she meets Raj, who looks exactly like Rohit. Raj accompanies Sonia back to India, and at the airport, he is shot at. That s when they realize that Rohit s death was not an accident… I have also written a review about this movie as it is my favorite movie and I watch it a few times in a year. Kaho Na Pyar Hai: Say It Is Love Movie Review

Kaho-Naa-Pyaar-HaiKaho Na Pyar Hai: Hritik and Ameesha

Kaho Na Pyar Hai (Say It Is Love)

I like Hritik Roshan since I saw this movie! KAHO NAA…PYAAR HAI . Kaho Na Pyar Hai is a 2000 blockbuster Bollywood film which first introduced Hrithik Roshan to the world and made him an overnight success. Rakesh Roshan who has directed many other successful movies, director of the film is also Hritik’s father. Debuting actress Amisha Patel, who looks like sweetness and light personified, also became,an instant commodity as well. Certainly, without the two leads (and specifically Hrithik), the movie wouldn’t be all that and a bag of chips. As it is, it’s box office bonanza.

Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai was the biggest Bollywood commercial success of 2000 and won many awards, including eight Filmfare Awards. Rakesh Roshan collected his first ever Filmfare Award, which he won as producer and as director. Hrithik became the only actor to win both, the Filmfare Award for Best Debut with the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the same film. He was praised by young and old for his acting and dancing abilities.

Cast

  • Hrithik Roshan as Rohit / Raj Chopra
  • Ameesha Patel as Sonia Saxena
  • Anupam Kher as Mr. Saxena / Sirjee
  • Dalip Tahil as Shakti Malik
  • Mohnish Behl as Inspector Kadam
  • Ashish Vidyarthi as Inspector Shinde
  • Satish Shah as Anthony Uncle (Rohit’s landlord)
  • Farida Jalal as Lily Aunty (Rohit’s landlady)
  • Rajesh Tandon as Atul Malik (Shakti Malik’s son and Sonia’s friend)
  • Asha Patel as Mrs. Chopra (Raj’s mother)
  • Tanaaz Currim as Neeta Saxena
  • Vrajesh Hirjee as Tony (Rohit’s friend)
  • Abhishek Sharma as Amit (Rohit’s younger brother)
  • Johnny Lever as Inspector Parab
  • Kamya Punjabi as girl on cruise ship

The first half of the film indulges in some pretty sappy romantic fluff, cruise scenes that are mushy. Suddenly movie takes turn with murder.  Then the scenery changes to New Zealand and the story gains serious momentum as the oh-so-gentle love story turns into a gripping crime drama and chase film.

So, exciting action for the guys. For the girls, a leading man with flashing green eyes, a muscular physique, explosive dancing skills, and one other thing. Boyfriends and male buddies of the female audience might end up loathing this dude, but one can’t really deny that the man can actually deliver his lines and effectively perform in his dual roles. Amisha Patel, cute and lovable as she is, is still overshadowed by Hrithik.

KAHO NAA…PYAAR HAI is almost three hours long, which gives the movie ample time to plug Coke and Popcorn. The songs are mostly fun and are, in turns, wistful and hopeful and romantic.

Pyar Ki Kashti Mein: Kaho Na Pyar Hai Song (Double Role _ 1st Guy)

Ek Pal Ka Jeena: Kaho Na Pyar Hai Song (Double Role_ 2nd Guy)

I loved this movie so much. have already watched it several times. Hrithik Roshan does great playing two totally different characters. I could watch it again and again. Loved the music. And the dance scene, especially the one in the club was spectacular!!! If you like Hrithik Roshan, this is a must see!!! Not only is he the most gorgeous guy I have ever laid eyes on, but he is an extremely talented dancer and actor. I don’t like too many action flicks, but this movie kept me captivated. What I love about Bollywood movies as opposed to Hollywood, is that they are so clean. They are far more romantic than most Hollywood movies without all the physical and not enough emotional connection. This movie is no exception.

Top Shammi Kapoor Movies To See

shammi3Pic: Shammi and Geeta Bali

My Ultimate bias is Shammi Kapoor of black and white era. He was not only good looking but also was good human being in real life and unique style that has been compared to Elvis Priestly. He played romantic roles, teased heroine and sang songs, in a Indian film era where most male leads played self controlled guy, who controlled the emotions and played mostly obedient sons and brothers such as Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Rajendra Kumar.

Top Shammi Kapoor Movies:

Here are my top favorite movies of Shammi Kapoor, that I love to watch and re-watch. It makes me feel better when I am feeling down, yes these movies are that great. You can get these movies with English subtitles although, sometimes it can be harder for older black and white movies.

1. Tumsa Nahin Dekha (Rough Translation: There is No-One Like You)

With this movie Shammi saw his first success in movie industry and movie was super hit. Tumsa Nahin Dekha is a 1957 film produced by Sashadhar Mukherjee for Filmistan and wrote and directed by Nasir Hussain. The film marked Hussain’s evolution into a director. He had written films like Munimjee and Paying Guest.

The film was conceived as a star vehicle for its heroine Ameeta, who was the protégée of Filmistan Studios owner Tolaram Jalan. Ironically, the film’s huge success at the box office, made the then-struggling Shammi Kapoor, an overnight sensation instead. This was the film where he developed his own individual look and youthful style and was his first light-hearted musical and its success helped move him to acting in this genre. The film also stars the popular villain and character actor Pran. Its music is by O.P. Nayyar and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Tumsa Nahin Dekha Plot:

File:Tumsa Nahin Dekha.jpgPlot is complicated with revenge and love story woven together. Twenty years ago, after killing his brother, Sardar Rajpal flees from his hometown in Shillong and re-locates to the rural area of Assam along with his adopted daughter, Meena. He asks his wife, Kamla, to send their son, Shankar, so that he can employ him and get him married to Meena.

Shankar arrives and he is welcomed by Sardar who employs him and introduces him to Meena. A few days later another young man shows up at his door claiming to be Kamla’s son. A baffled Sardar also welcomes him, and puts both the young men under observation in order to find who the real Shankar is. The question remains why would anyone want to impersonate Shankar, and what will happen to Sardar himself after the Police catch up with him for killing his brother 20 years ago.

Of course, Shammi acted in some other great movies and some not so great movies, however he was always dashing, romantic hero even when he played negative roles (such in Memshahib with Meena Kumari and Kishore Kumar as a hero).

Some of the other movies he was known for are, Tumse Accha Kaun Hai?, Dil Tera Diwana, Professor, China Town, Rajkumar, Janwar, Teesri Manzil, An Evening in Paris, Bramhachari, Andaz and Vidhaata. You can check out Shammi Kapoor’s Movies here: Shammi Kapoor Movies.

Best Songs of Shammi Kapoor

Indian movies are always musical and melodious lyrics and beat you can dance to; Shammi Kapoor was never traditional dancer but yet he has suave style that no other Indian heroes had. Some of Shammi Kapoor songs are fun to dance to, and some are great to listen to and sing with. Here are some of the best Shammi Kapoor songs I love, and I am sure you will too;

Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle Song from Tumsa Nahi Dekha (1957) Love story Movie starring Shammi Kapoor, Ameeta, Pran, B.N.Vyas, Raj Mehra
Music Director : O.P. Nayyar Director : Nazir Hussain

This song is sung in movie by Ameeta when Shammi Kapoor’s character is upset at heroine for accusing him as a thief. In the end of song they make up and dance and sing together. I think Ameeta was a good heroine who did not get her due in bollywood. Shammi Kapoor looks simply handsome and adorable with his mannerism and style and this nice melodious song.

Brahmachari (Hindi film), a 1968 film starring Shammi Kapoor, Rajshree and Pran

This famous and catchy song with nice beat is picturized on Shammi Kapoor and Mumtaz. Mumtaz is in love with Pran and Shammi’s character is trying to find out more about Pran as he is helping Rajshree, as she too wants to marry Pran. In end, she falls in love with Shammi who has been brahmchari till then. Listen to this song and see Mumtaz’s sari, I do not see how she wore it, but looks great.

Shammi Kaoor: Biography Of A Legend

I simply love Shammi Kapoor and his movies. He was original, one of a kind person. In times, where heroes were playing much restrained charactors, Shammi was unique to play fun, lover boys type of roles in his movies. I told my husband that if Shammi Kapoor of “Dil Deke Dekho” came by, he would have a big competition. It is unique as I do not have crush on any new bollywood stars like I have on Shammi Kapoor and in small extent Govinda (Love 86 fame). Interesting is I am not the only one who is a huge fan of Shammi Kapoor, there are many;

Here is what Rediff’s Dinesh Raheja has to say about Shammi Kapoor:

Source: http://www.rediff.com/entertai/2002/jul/29dinesh.htm

Shammi Kapoor broke the sound barrier in Hindi films. In the gentlemanly 50s and 60s, Shammi yelled the loudest (yahoo! suku suku!) and courted his heroine with the unmistakeable arrogance of good looks laced with pure, almost manic boisterousness.

Here was an effervescent hero who had so much energy that even a 35 mm screen could barely contain it.

Today, the 70-year-old Shammi Kapoor wears a benign expression and a string of holy beads, but in his 20s and 30s, the tall, handsome and light-eyed hero wore a rakish grin and had a string of beauties vying for his attention.

Shammi was born Shamsherraj Kapoor in Mumbai in 1931. His father, Prithviraj Kapoor, a handsome hero with Grecian looks, had just appeared in Alam Ara. By the early 50s, Shammi’s elder brother Raj Kapoor too had become famous as a star-director.

Not surprisingly, Shammi Kapoor also joined the family profession in 1953 at the age of 22. But the gawky young Shammi who sported a pencil-thin moustache and greasy, slicked back hair, soon found himself amidst a heap of flops, including Rail Ka Dibba (Madhubala), Shama Parwana (Suraiya) and Mehbooba (Nalini Jaywant).

Shammi’s onscreen romantic image was under a cloud; but off screen, his sunny charm had spunky beauty, Geeta Bali, eating out of his palms. A smitten Geeta Bali even convinced Kidar Sharma to cast her in a man’s role in his Shammi starrer Rangeen Raatein so that she could accompany Shammi to the Ranikhet outdoor of the film.

The Shammi-Geeta Bali marriage resulted in the birth of son Micky. No longer a carefree bachelor, Shammi was compelled to do some serious rethinking about his screen career. Taking a cue from his Hollywood screen idols, James Dean and Elvis Presley, Shammi decided to reinvent himself in the ‘rebel star’ mould and minted it to advantage in his first smash hit — Nasir Hussain’s rollicking romance, Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957).

He cashed in on the public adulation showered on the brash, brattish lover by working out extensions of the same in many of his subsequent films. Big-time stardom came Shammi’s way with Nasir Hussain’s Dil Deke Dekho (1959) and Subodh Mukherjee’s Junglee (1961). In Dil Deke Dekho, he was paired with ebullient newcomer Asha Parekh, while Junglee saw him wooing yet another newcomer, the frail beauty with the shrill voice, Saira Banu.

With Junglee, Shammi gifted the Hindi film screen dictionary with a new word of exultation: Yahoo! Charged by the word and the accompanying Shankar Jaikishen-composed song, Chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe, Shammi gleefully tumbled down snow-covered hills while shooting this number. His knees hurt to date.

Hugely-catchy Mohammed Rafi songs, pretty new heroines and a plot often as fluffy as the Simla snows became an important part of the Shammi Kapoor experience. Aware of the import of songs, Shammi Kapoor took a keen interest in music sittings and also ensured he had as many, if not more, song as the heroine. Producers were more than happy with Shammi’s keen interest in music because his uninhibited dancing to songs like O haseena zulphonwali and Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche became the rage.

Shammi’s sense of rhythm and timing also helped him generate big laughs. One of Teesri Manzil’s most treasured scenes is the train sequence where Shammi attempts to give an overweight co-travellor an attack of the giggles. In Professor (1962), Shammi gave an undervalued performance, proving to be a mirthquake as the disguised-as-an-old-man professor who unwittingly melts the heart of an iron-hearted old lady (Lalita Pawar).

Through the sixties, Shammi spawned a constant flow of successes like Raajkumar, Janwar and An Evening In Paris. However, while he soared as a star, his capabilities as an actor were suspect. Titles like Junglee, Budtameez, Bluff Master only strengthened his image of an actor up to monkey tricks.

But Shammi jolted the critics with his charged performance of a murder suspect wanting to exonerate himself in the racy thriller, Teesri Manzil (1966). His turn as the sensitive bachelor who provides home and love to orphans in Bramhachari (1968) won him the Filmfare award for the Best Actor.

Unfortunately, Shammi lost Geeta Bali to small pox in 1965. His second wife Neela Devi, brought a semblance of serenity in Shammi Kapoor’s turbulent life and proved to be an ideal mother to his son and daughter.

However, at the close of the 60s, Shammi Kapoor proved to be a walking monument to bad career moves. Pairing with a new generation of heroines like Leena (Preetam) and Babita (Tumse Achcha Kaun Hai) underlined the fact that he had let himself go — his hair was thinning, his girth expanding.

The emergence of a new romantic icon, Rajesh Khanna, also had major repercussions. Shammi’s regular director Shakti Samanta shifted sights to Khanna. The Khanna-Samanta combine produced a megahit like Aradhana while Shammi and Samanta had a dud that came down with a thud, Jaane Anjaane. Even Shammi’s paring with lucky mascot, Asha Parekh, now resulted in disappointments like Jawan Mohabbat and Pagla Kahin Ka.

But all was not lost yet. Shammi Kapoor delivered an remarkably restrained performance in Andaaz (1971) as the widower who falls in love with a widow (Hema) — his most uncharacteristic and one of his best roles. Unfortunately, here too, he had to share the limelight with Rajesh Khanna who thundered with Zindagi ek safar in a special appearance.

Recognising the signs of the times, Shammi Kapoor changed tracks to direction. He chose to remake the raunchy comedy, Irma La Douce, and cast Zeenat Aman as a street walker in love with a bumbling cop, Sanjeev Kumar. Shammi played a jovial pub owner. Produced by his loyal producer and business associate, F C Mehra (Singapore, Professor, Prince), Manoranjan boasted of R D Burman delights like Goya ke chunanche but failed to give a new twist to Shammi’s career. Shammi next made an Arabian Nights’ fable, Bundalbaaz, with Rajesh Khanna and played a genie, but the magic failed to rub off on the film.

Today, Shammi Kapoor occasionally acts in films and makes rare appearances at premieres. The virtual reality of computers and the spiritual realm take up more of his time than than the make-believe world of films.
